The why behind Dogwood & Deathcap Name.

The name Dogwood & Deathcap was chosen for two reasons.

First, we’ve always loved alliteration, and together, the two words create a sense of yin and yang, a natural balance that captures the spirit of what we do.

More importantly, we chose these specific symbols for what they represent: two living things you can find in the forests of our home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia.

The Dogwood, native to Appalachia and even the state flower of Virginia, plays a vital role in the forest’s ecological cycle. It stands for life, growth, and light a symbol of renewal and resilience.

The Deathcap, by contrast, is an introduced species of highly poisonous mushroom, once known as the “King Slayer” for its lethal history dating back to Roman times. Though deadly if consumed, it also forms symbiotic relationships with trees like the dogwood, breaking down rot and decay to create fertile soil for new growth. It represents death, decay, and darkness, the other half of nature’s balance.

Together, they embody the full cycle of life: creation and destruction, light and shadow, life and death in harmony.
